Davewatch part #94

I think I am going to go and lie down for a bit.

That looked fairly sane, if a bit Jewish-exceptionalist. Have I missed something?

Well, in the past Dave has said that the God of the Jews is in fact a usurping female demiurge (hence the emphasis on soft furnishings in the Torah); that Jewish men sincerely believe that they are worshiping the true God, but that Jewish women probably don't; and that the Nazi Holocaust was a kind of tit-for-tat pay back on the Jews for all the animals they had sacrificed to the false God. Of course, you can believe that the Jews worship a false God and still write intelligently about World War II -- heck, we've sometimes allowed Christians and even atheists to write about it -- but given Dave's stated opinions, one approaches the new book with some trepidation.

Fortunately, his other forthcoming work, "Glamourpuss", has much less scope for controversy: it's a satire on the fashion industry. An industry traditionally dominated, by, er, women and gay men.

"To me the Talmud are commentaries, like the Hadith in Islam or Paul's Epistles in Christianity."

You do sometimes wonder how much of this stuff he has actually read, don't you.

Ah. I see your point. Still, the sample looks like the sort of thing an intelligent if self-important tourist might write after visiting Auschwitz; and the artwork is really quite good. There's even a passing mention that some victims were women, although none are actually shown.

Did the True God cause the Holocaust, then, or was it some kind of karmic thing that just resulted from the iniquities of the demiurge?

Glamourpuss actually isn't a satire on the fashion industry - at least the first issue isn't. Rather it's a lesson in how to ink like Alex Raymond (I've reviewed it at http://dccountdown.blogspot.com/2008/02/men-reading-fashion-magazines-oh-what.html )

And from the looks of it, Judenhaas will be the work of Dave-Sim-the-wannabe-Jew rather than Dave-Sim-the-Elohim-worshipper, so I think it'll probably be OK. Certainly the testimonials quoted there are fairly convincing...

Oh, is it actually out? Will brave the creature from the id and pick up a copy from the only surviving comic shop in Bristol...

No, it's not out yet, but he sent out free promo copies to every comic shop. My local shop gave me their promo because I'm 'the Cerebus fan' there. It comes out in April, and is actually very interesting in an Understanding Comics kind of way.

That's just the sort of thing I'd have expected a Marxist feminist to ask.

Guilty on one-and-a-half counts, of course.

I was at a one-day thing on "The Graphic Novel" at Birkbeck College last weekend, where I had one of those "can we please just rewind this conversation" moments as I found myself describing Cerebus to a feminist who'd never been in a comics shop.

(I had another near-miss when someone who used to contribute to "Deadline" wondered if it would have been more successful in a cheaper format and I spotted that my reply was about to unpack to: "No, actually, it just needed to be better".)
