The Boston Tea Party has a very small supply of that special coffee that's harvested from cat-poo; its suppliers sold it to them at cost price and they are passing it on to their customers, so while it would normally cost a hundred million billion pounds a cup, they have made it available for £2.

It tastes, as the great Dave Sim once remarked, very much like a cup of coffee.

Is a civet actually a cat? Or is it like how a panda isn't really a bear (unless it turns out it is)?
Amazingly, I am not going to check this on Wikipedia.

Funny thing about that kopi luwak -- in Indonesia, even at retail, it costs about the same as any other nice-ish coffee what comes in a bag, and sits in stacks at the ends of supermarket aisles.

I bought some in Jakarta. It was OK. I wonder if you could do this with other products - e.g. take a multipack of Penguin bars to America and flog them for a tenner each. Actually, I've just remembered, in Jakarta a packet of Doritos will set you back £4. Funny old world.

I'm guessing you wouldn't normally be able to pay for it with money out of your kitty then?

Actually, Mr. Sim would propably say people actually wanting to drink such a thing is yet more evidence of DEMON WOMAN LIGHT.

Thanks for saving the rest of us cofee-drinking Rilstonians from considerable psychological & financial discomfort, by the way

Tom, yes, you could do that. Some of us would pay extra for the "cool" of eating Brrrritish, and some of us would pay extra because we remember eating them when Abroad, and some of us would pay extra because we got addicted when eating them Abroad.

The latter is the reason I happily pay nearly $7.00 for the smallest salable size jar of Marmite. And even more for Braxton pickle, when I can find it. You can keep the salad cream, though.

A civet is not a cat (i.e. it is not of the family Felidae). Civets are Viverrids which look like cats, but are in fact only distantly related. It's simply convergent evolution at work which makes them look so similar.

Pandas, however, are in the family Ursidae and really are bears. At one time, pandas were believed to be part of the raccoon family, but this isn't the case. You might be thinking of koalas, which are marsupials and therefore certainly not bears.

Good to know, Andrew, thanks.
I was thinking of the panda/raccoon connection--I had an inkling they'd been classified as bears after all but wasn't sure.
