Reminds me a lot of my elderly mother - re the rambling delivery and the free association of ideas, plus the tendency to treat any event (no matter how big or small) with the same degree of importance.* My mother, or maybe a nine-year-old.

Is it just me or does 'And straightway coming up out of the water' sound eerily contemporary? Or (at very least) kind of 'unbiblical'?

* What John the Baptist is wearing and Christ's trial in the wilderness being accorded the same amount of space.

Modern Bibles usually have not only chapter divisions (which are themselves artificial and not by the author) but also divide up the chapters into readings with headings written by the editor. When those are not there and do not cause you to artificially pause, it is much easier to note the lack of narrative flow. "This happened. And this happened. And this happened."
