Funnily enough, back in 2003 I remember enthusing to you about 'Black Pearl' as having strangely realistic elements: bringing your broadside to bear by using sweeps or anchor & capstan, or loading cannons with landridge. However, I do wonder if the greatest challenge for the Plymouth Brethren in the 21st century is being told that their strict codes of behaviour are 'just guidelines'?

'Merlin' grew on me at the point when I accepted that it wasn't Arthurian as I understood it, and certainly not like the 1979 BBC 'Legnd of King Arthur' which was explicitly early medieval (though I still remember the ageing Morgana's explanation for her unrelenting rancour towards Arthur: 'In the game of chess, someone has to take the dark pieces'. ) While we might have expected Anthony Head to be cool about teens with supernatural powers, his King Uther was a nice piece of positioning for it's time. The need to make a political marriage for his son rules out any relationship with a 'servant-who-happens-to-be black', and a family tragedy means that Merlin's relationship with Arthur can never go behind Very Good Friends.
